Job
overview
The great variety of the Group's worldwide
activities and locations demand complex
information systems in constant evolution.
At Total, the mission of an IT-IS or Telecoms
Engineer thus has very wide reach, covering
networks, projects, production, office systems,
and also new technologies. All of these
areas generate exciting projects that involve
many engineers, from the most junior to
the most senior Group members.
First steps
The first responsibilities of junior IT-IS
or Telecoms Engineers are designed to meet
two objectives : to help them apply their
technical knowledge in meaningful ways in
operations, and to let them discover the
Group's different professions and business
areas. Always in a team context, these first
assignments bring them in touch with a wide
cross-section of "internal customers".
Career options
Apart from "classic" career development
by moving into other technical fields or
into team management, IT-IS or Telecoms
Engineers may also choose positions with
new responsibilities through international
assignments. Whether on a permanent basis
or temporarily, they may also opt for professional
tracks outside the IT-IS field, to explore
other business areas.

What do you do
in your job ?
Since I want a career with real opportunities
for development, in France and internationally,
I joined the Information Systems Division
of Total's Refining & Marketing branch.
I started out in the TRD 2000 Project for
the upgrade and harmonization of a large
part of the Refining & Marketing information
systems. In this very large-scale project,
I contribute my technical expertise to adapt
the new system to the specific needs of
Total, and to make it communicate with outside
systems. This project has considerable impact
on operations ; it has an architecture framed
around Unix-Oracle, and SAP R/3 for applications.
In actual practice,
what does that involve ?
This project covers many different areas
: purchasing, logistics, sales, finance,
etc. For us on the IS and IT side, it's
important to understand what all these professions
want and need. So working out the perfect
solution involves true teamwork. The secret
for success is constant dialogue !
What qualities
do you need for this job ?
To get the most out of this job and to get
the best results, you need an open and curious
mind. And for a project of this scale, it's
essential to be able to meet deadlines,
to be well-organized, and to have a strict
work discipline - in other words, to be
a perfectionist ! But it's tremendously
satisfying to be involved in a SAP project
with such a rich variety of different facets.

Head of Applications for Exploration &
Production
Degree from Ecole des Mines - Saint-Etienne.
What do you do
in your job ?
I'm in charge of software applications used
at Head Office of the Exploration &
Production branch of Total. I take care
of all application developments, which means
giving support to users in their dealings
with outside companies, managing the development,
replacement and maintenance of existing
software, organizing major operations for
migration, etc. With its highly scientific
side, Exploration & Production is a
particularly exciting work environment for
anyone enthusiastic about information technology.
It's an area of activity with enormous needs
in computing power and sophisticated applications,
where leading-edge software and equipment
are an absolute must. You constantly need
to stay at the very top of technology.
In actual practice,
what does that involve ?
At Total, IT is not an end in itself, but
a true support for operations. Working partly
with outside resources, we pilot projects
and we design, supervise and produce solutions.
That's our essential mission : efficient
solutions and answers for Exploration &
Production users and subsidiaries. One example
: Abu Dhabi calls in, their site is down
- our job will be to get it up and running
within the hour !
What qualities
do you need for this job ?
You need to be perfectly organized : at
least 50 e-mail messages per day, five to
six hours at meetings, one or two reports
to write up - and through it all, the phone
keeps ringing non-stop! The advantage ?
There's never a dull moment, that's for
sure !
