A Career in the
Marketing Field.
Before joining Total, I worked for eighteen
years primarily in the Marketing field for
other gas and oil companies. The Marketing
of oil and gas in the energy business is
very different from other industries.
You see, natural resources like gas must
be forecasted on a daily basis and that’s
how we project our sales. There’re
constant changes and every day there seems
to be a new challenge and a different situation,
which makes the job extremely exciting.
My work at Total.
I joined Total as a Senior Marketing Representative
and held this position for less than two
years. I had learned about the position
by word-of-mouth through someone who worked
in Total. From the time I submitted my C.V.,
it was a short process. I interviewed twice
and started within the group four weeks
later.
This first position was fun and stressful,
as well. I worked on the Canyon Express
Project G.M. that involved a pipeline construction
project to a platform over 50 miles away
to the export pipelines. So, I had to work
with different departments and companies.
In Total our primary emphasis is that there
are no curtailments so that the production
from the wells continues to flow from upstream
to downstream to the point of sale. Our
domestic infrastructures function mostly
via interstate and intrastate regulations.
The transportation takes place through pipelines
for the natural gas and through either pipelines
or trucks for the crude oil.
As the Marketing Manager, I have to negotiate
or contribute to a variety of agreements
working together with other Departments
such as the Legal Department, Business Development,
and the Operations Group. I have to ensure
that all the agreements and contracts are
in place for the movement and ultimate sale
of the product, which includes the transportation,
compression, processing, and sales of the
oil and gas. All of this ensures the transportation
of the product from the production area
to the sales area.
Also, I oversee that the appropriate invoicing
of all our sales are done and that invoices
for services from third parties are accurate
which is also coordinated with Revenue Accounting
Department. The Marketing Department also
works with the Business Development Group
to provide pricing related information for
property acquisitions or divestitures.
As you see, there’s no typical day
in my job! I work in an administrative building
in Houston but travel as necessary to our
field locations for review of the properties
and travel on occasion to meet with companies
with whom we are conducting business
To sum-up, I have three main responsibilities:
To negotiate and administer the agreements
related to the movement and sale of oil
and gas; to evaluate the export pipeline
connections; and, to prepare the in-coming
and on-going invoices.
Career Opportunities.
I would say that although Total is a predominantly
male industry, as a woman, I‘ve had
a very interesting experience. There’re
many opportunities within the group. I look
forward to advance my career within the
group, possibly through the Business Development
Department.
